Workshop of Young Scientists on Biodiversity and Conservation Biology in Southwest China:
Advances in Conservation Genetics
10 – 13 July 2015, Kunming
In recent decades, molecular techniques have become an integral component of conservation biology. Genetic studies are used to inform conservation strategies of many endangered species, including the Chinese giant salamander, endemic cycads and even economically important wild rice species. The advent of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) techniques opens up unique opportunities for molecular techniques to be the main tool for species identification, movement tracking, population demography monitoring and for understanding the basic ecology of threatened species. Advances in the application of NGS have thus taken center stage in conservation genetics.
This workshop focuses on the application of molecular techniques on conservation issues. The first day features a series of research projects from Southwest China and Japan on species of conservation concern. Following the seminar series, there will be a three-day (invitation only) training course on a newly developed NGS technique for genotyping, termed MIG-Seq. The training course will be conducted by Prof Yoshihisa Suyama and Dr Yu Matsuki from Tohoku University, Japan.

No registration fee. If you want to give a talk in the Workshop, please send your topic title to yuwenbin@xtbg.ac.cn, with a summary (ca. 500 words). The application deadline for the talk is 30 June, 2015.
The MIG-Seq training course is only opened to invited participants. If your group is using or will be using NGS techniques, please recommend a senior and experienced researcher or student to submit an application for the training course. Please provide a one-page personal information including research affiliation, research background, and current or future research project(s).

保护遗传学研究进展

近几十年来，分子生物学技术已成为保护生物学不可或缺的研究手段。遗传学研究有助于制定濒危物种的保护战略，如中国大鲵，特有苏铁，以及重要经济作物野生稻。二代测序（NGS）技术的出现开创了更多新的研究领域，即分子技术成为了鉴定物种，跟踪动物运动，监测种群动态和了解受威胁物种的生态基础的重要技术。NGS技术在保护遗传学的应用已经变得越来越重要。
本次研讨班的重点是讨论分子生物学技术在保护生物学问题中的应用。研讨班第1天是研究者们介绍中国西南地区和日本物种保护相关的研究报告。在研讨会后，将是为期三天基于NGS的基因分型技术的培训班。该技术由日本Tohoku University 的Yoshihisa Suyama教授和Yu Matsuki博士最新开发，命名为MIG-Seq。本次培训班将由两位开发人亲自讲授和演示。
